Hubbardton Forge Finish Guide
To ensure the highest quality product possible,
Hubbardton Forge has developed special finishes for indoor and outdoor applications. Indoor Translucent Finishes (-03, -05, -07)Translucent finishes allow the unique character created by the hand forging process to show. The finish appears darker in areas have been more distressed by both heat and the craftsman, reflecting the temper, colors, scaling, hammering, and bending. On the more flat, open areas of a piece (such as a backplate), the finish appears lighter and is purposefully applied unevenly. The result is a finish that features varying textures and pattern, ranging from light speckles, to a vein-like pattern, to a puddle appearance, all in the same overall color. The Mahogany (-03), Bronze (-05), and Dark Smoke (-07) finishes are all translucent.
Opaque Indoor Finishes (-10, -20, -19)Opaque finishes are the traditional choice for coloring metal and protecting it from rusting and marring. The opaque finished provide a full covering of the metal. While the Black and Satin Steel finishes are remarkably uniform, the Natural Iron finish has the slightest variation in color as a result of the natural texture in the metal. The Black (-10), Natural Iron (-20), and Stain Steel (-19) finishes are all opaque.
Outdoor Specialty Opaque Finishes (-13, -15, -17)Hubbardton Forge makes all of their outdoor fixtures out of aluminum rather than steel. As a result, special finishes have been developed to provide the best possible protection from rust and corrosion, while still capturing the same character and depth found in the indoor translucent finish options. These outdoor finishes are technically opaque, however they will appear much like the indoor translucent finishes. They are the Opaque Mahogany (-13), Opaque Bronze (-15), and Opaque Dark Smoke (-17).
Traditional Opaque Finishes (-10, -20)The Natural Iron (-20) and Black (-10) outdoor finishes will provide uniform color, much like their indoor counterparts.
Finish Colors
(-03) Mahogany A warm, rich brown color with red tones and subtle golden highlights. Complements all of the glass options and is ideal for Tuscan decor. See the description for translucent finishes to ensure a full understanding of the possible color variances.
(-05) BronzeA golden brown color with distinct black flecking, almost looks like a burnished gold, not brass. Complements oil-rubbed bronze and is a very warm, versatile color. See the description of translucent finishes to ensure a full understanding of the possible color variances.
(-07) Dark SmokeIn the brown family but with cooler, more grey hues than the ΖBronzeΔ finish. Probably the most inconsistent of the finishes creating a lot of character, which is often considered highly desirable. This finish often looks like the colors were splashed on and pooled together in certain areas creating dark veins and lighter spots.
(-10) BlackAn even, matte black color which provides a traditional forged iron look.
(-13) Mahogany (Outdoor)Not as much character or depth as the -03, but same color family. The patterns on this finish are much more uniform than the -03.
(-15) Bronze (Outdoor)Not as much character or depth as the -05, but same color family. The patterns on this finish are much more uniform than the -05.
(-17) Dark Smoke (Outdoor)Not as much character or depth as the -07, but same color family. The patterns on this finish are much more uniform than the -07.
(-19) Satin SteelLooks much like a silver stainless steel with little sparkles. Ideal for contemporary decor.
(-20) Natural IronActually a pewter, Ζgraphite pencilΔ grey. Not black. The color is not flat but has slight variations, though not as dramatic as a translucent finish.
